Obituary BEAUFORT, NC Ed Book (Edwin Alexander Book), 77, of Beaufort, NC, died Sunday, March 13, 2016. A retired writer, editor, businessman - and ever a poet, Ed had a physically incapacitating stroke three years ago but continued to read, learn, and love life and family. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sue Jones Book; daughter Kemmerlin (Kem) Book Jenkinson and husband Steve Jenkinson of Beaufort; son Edwin A. (Eddy) Book and wife Lori Russo Book of Gainesville, FL; brother Carl F. Book Sr. of Lakewood, NJ; grandchildren, Tabatha Mitchell Jenkinson of Beaufort, Daniel E.A. Book of Gainesville, FL and Alexandra Anna Nicole Book of Tampa, FL.; and 17 nieces and nephews who were dear to him. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Oceanview Cemetery in Beaufort. Family and friends will return to The Royal James Caf at 117 Turner Street for visitation to remember and celebrate Eds life. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Gerard (Red) Book and sister Margaret (Peggy) Book. Born October 1, 1938 in St. Vincents Hospital, New York, NY, to Edwin and Margaret Henneberry Book, Ed was christened and schooled at St. Sylvesters Roman Catholic Church in Concord, Staten Island, NY. With his father was a Merchant Marine and ship engineer for Standard Oil, the original Sailors Snug Harbor a nearby place he often visited, not yet a Verrazano Bridge to The City making a ferry ride was the only way into Manhattan, Ed found real kinship with Carteret County culture and people. He and Sue have owned the Royal James Caf originally Vics and Beauforts oldest eating establishment - for 33 years and formerly with a partner, The Eastern Weekly local newspaper. Ed studied English at Monmouth College in Long Branch, NJ, where he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity and active in the arts and drama and the college newspaper. He began a professional career with words as an associate editor for ACE Books in NYC, the first science fiction publisher. He moved on to From The State Capitals, an Asbury Park, NJ, digest of topic-specific information from across the country and reading 50 state capital newspapers every day must have put ink in his blood.That journalistic passion brought him to the Sanford Herald in Sanford, NC, to begin an NC newspaper career marked with writing and publishing awards for him and his staff and the papers he and industry leadership positions including Associated Press News Council president. He worked as a writer covering government including the NC Legislature while at The Gastonia Gazette. He was editor of the Sun Journal in New Bern and Times-News in Burlington before moving to Beaufort and into business for himself.
