Kathleen Rountree

April 6, 1934 — November 17, 2015

Obituary Kathleen Lewis Rountree, 81, of Morehead City, died Tuesday, November 17, 2015, at her home. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 23, 2015 at Brooks Funeral Home with Chaplain Ryan Insprucker presiding. Interment will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Park. Mrs. Rountree was born on April 6, 1934, in Morehead City, to Capt. Billie Lewis and Annie Emery Lewis. Mrs. Rountree, "Kay" as she was known to friends and family, was a devoted wife and mother, and loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren without measure. Mrs. Rountree was active in churches for many years and helped her husband Horace run a foster home in New Jersey for a time. Kay was an excellent seamstress and made christening gowns, gorgeous dresses including matching shoes and bonnets, fancy shirts and other clothes for her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and their children. Her handmade dolls, doll clothes and teddy bears were coveted by many, and always given away to family and friends. She made fantastic and exotic Halloween customs for her children; a giant rooster costume is especially remembered. Mrs. Rountree and her husband loved to garden and had beautiful flower gardens and extensive vegetable gardens wherever they went, introducing many in New Jersey to collards and okra while living there in the 1960s and 70s. Kay was known far and wide as the "Sweet Potato Queen" because of her delicious pies. She had a wonderful soprano voice and a quick wit passed down from her mother Annie Lewis. Mrs. Rountree grew up in the house her father Capt. Billie Lewis built on Bay Street in Morehead City and traces her family to the earliest settlers of Shackleford Banks, Morehead City and down east areas. She is survived by her husband Horace Elton Rountree, of Morehead City, five sons, William R. Rountree of Morehead City, Dr. Rodney A. Rountree, of East Falmouth, MA, Peter A. Rountree of Morehead City, David A. Rountree of Morehead City and John K. Rountree of Morehead City; a sister, Lillie Pearl Lewis Nelson of Morehead City; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, five brothers and a sister, her son Horace Elton Rountree, Jr., preceded her in death.
