Obituary Katie Wortham Stephenson, 91, of Raleigh, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at her home in Emerald Isle, NC. Her family rejoices that she has been released into the arms of Jesus and is no longer trapped in a worn out and diseased body. Instead, she enjoys fellowship with her Savior, with her husband Bob, her daughter Susan, and so many friends and family who have gone on before her. Katie was born on January 9, 1932, the youngest of fifteen children, and grew up on family farms in Vance and Wake counties. She enjoyed a long and fruitful life with Bob raising her family, serving her Lord at Athens Drive Baptist Church and The Shepherds Church, and hosting family reunions and church fellowships in their home. Katie attended Fuquay Springs High School and Hardbarger Business College and enjoyed working in the office of Dr. Raymond Edwards, and for many years at Cary Oil Company. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Stephenson ("Bob"); parents Robert H. Wortham and Nannie Watkins Wortham; daughter Susan Stephenson; sisters Leona Stainback, Besse Gill, Louise Norwood, Ora Mann, Elizabeth Wilson, Annie Eason and Lorena Cooper; and brothers Johnnie, Raymond, Frank ('Buddy'), Ollie, Nathan, Robert, and Bill Wortham. She is survived by her son Robert, Jr., daughter-in-law Cindy, grandsons Brooks (Carrie) of Clayton and Bryan (Sarah) of Ocean Isle Beach, great grandchildren Aleah, Callan, Kate and Ellie Stephenson, and many nieces and nephews. The family is grateful to the very special people who cared for Katie (and us) in her last year: Leisa Brooks, Melissa Nelson, and Suzie Spivey of Transitions LifeCare of Raleigh; Diane Bryant, Carolyn Dunlap, Angela Eccleston, and Blake Steinman, of Cardinal Hospice Care of Jacksonville; Rebecca Hill and Valtina Jones of Home Instead Senior Care of Raleigh; and CNAs Nicole Pearson and Renee McAllister of Jacksonville and Andrea Lamb of Richlands. These are special people with a passion for their very special calling. A service will be held in coming weeks at The Shepherds Church in Cary.
