Obituary 1-888-579-7953 Code: 2002089P Richard Travis Smith, 89, of Beaufort, March 22, 2015, Crystal Coast Hospice House. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 26, 2015, at Brooks Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Michael Fields of the First Baptist Church officiating and Masonic Rites conferred by Franklin Lodge #109 A.F. and A.M. He was born July 4, 1925 at home in Beaufort and was in the grocery store business for more than 40 years, retiring as store manager of Big Star in Beaufort. He was married to his wife, Valeria, for more than 65 years. An avid craftsman, he was a decoy carver and a member of the Decoy Carvers Guild in Harkers Island. A member of Concordia Lodge #11, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, he was a past Grand Master of the state of North Carolina, and a member of the Miriam Rebekah Lodge #141, Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He was a member of Franklin Lodge #109, A.F. and A.M, and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Beaufort Chapter #128. He was also appointed by the Honorable Gov. James Holshouser to the state board of Social Services, and served as chair of the Carteret County Department of Social Services during that time. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Beaufort, NC. He is survived by his wife, Valeria Lawrence Smith of the home; three Daughters, Joyce Smith Masters and husband, Kenneth David Masters, Jr. of Beaufort, NC, Aleta Smith Cox and husband, Hyler Wayne Cox of Engelhard, NC, and Richard Richy Smith Huneycutt of Kinston, NC; two grandchildren, Kenneth Travis Masters of Beaufort, NC, Kaitlin Lawrence Green of Kinston, NC; sister-in-law, Anne Hill Smith of Beaufort, NC, numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Aleta Mason Smith; two brothers, John Smith and Carl Gerald Smith The family will receive friends at the graveside after the service and at the home. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, 403 Ann Street, Beaufort, NC 28516 or the Crystal Coast Hospice House, 100 Big Rock Weigh, Newport, NC 28570.
