Harlowe

Christine Robertson Mitchell, 102, of Harlowe, passed away on Saturday, November 22, 2025 at Crystal Bluffs in Morehead City.

Born to Nellie Gray Robertson in Danville, VA, in 1922, Christine and her siblings, Mildred, Hazel, Tom, Bill, and JC moved to the local area with the opening of Cherry Point in the early 40s. “Chris” was considered the matriarch of the group by her younger siblings as she was a motherly figure while Nellie worked long hours in textile mills prior to settling here. Marrying A.L. and raising her five children on the Neuse River in Temples Point and then in Harlowe, Christine was the example of hard work and determination.

She had a long career as a purchasing agent in Navy Supply at Cherry Point and was very civic minded while always participating in activities that built a stronger community, especially for the benefit and growth of the youth.

Christine was a strong proponent of women’s equal rights especially in the workforce. She marched in Washington, DC for women's Equal Rights Amendment *ERA" in the 1970's. She also volunteered as a Candy Striper during the Vietnam War.

As a lifelong adult member of Harlowe Methodist Church, she wore many hats over the years as Secretary, Sunday School teacher, and her more recent love - arranging silk flowers. Christine found great joy as a leader in 4-H programs, traveling to many events across the region. Always on the hunt for the perfect fabric, she loved teaching her daughters and granddaughters the necessity and creativity of a sewing machine. She enjoyed many years of playing golf with her family at Cherry Point and in 1996 she succeeded in scoring a hole-in-one at Hole #7 at Cherry Point Golf Course at the age of 74. She was a creative artist using many mediums such as watercolors, oil painting, acrylics, and chalk. With a strong sense of independence Christine was always on the road, even driving herself to the state fair at the youthful age of 92, without telling her family.

Christine knew the value of education and was a lifelong learner. She was not intimidated by technology, spending much time learning on computers, and using programs for her many sewing projects. Her grandchildren loved to spend extended time at her home, where she always had a job for them, all the while instilling her Christian values and hard-working traits.

The family would like to thank the staff of Crystal Bluffs for their care during these past 6-1/2 years. Dr. Charlesworth and her staff were exceptionally devoted and compassionate. Her nurses, CNAs, and other caregivers were very loving and caring individuals who became her adopted family on a daily basis. She trusted and loved many of them.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00pm on Monday, December 1, 2025 at Noe-Brooks Funeral Home of Morehead City. A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, December 2, 2025 at Noe-Brooks on what would have been her 103rd birthday. Burial will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Park. A recording of the service will be available at noebrooks.net.

She is survived by her son, LaMonte “Monty” Mitchell (Kathi) of Morehead City; daughter, Colleen Higgins (Miles) of Wilmington; son, Graham Mitchell (Lisa) of Temples Point; daughter, Laura Norris (George) of Adams Creek; son-in-law Page Reynolds of Ringgold, VA; nine grandchildren, Nikolas Mitchell (Michelle) of Oxford; Erin Harkley (Corey) of Havelock; Corbitt Norris (Danielle) of Beaufort; Amy Allred (Ryan) of Temples Point; Berri Willis (Michael) of Morehead City; Nevin Norris (Holly) of Adams Creek; Spencer Higgins of Wilmington; Katie Reynolds Mitchell (David) of Chatham, VA; Eliza Higgins of Durham; 16 great grandchildren, Brennan Harkley, Tyler Mitchell, Noah Harmon, Emmy Mitchell, Jonah Harmon, Hunter Fulcher, Graham Norris, Wyatt Allred, Rubi Willis, Kaison Willis, Lydia Norris, Elliott Allred, Sabina Norris, Timothy Mitchell, Jude Mitchell, and Kash Willis; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
