Edward Powers, 81, of Pine Knoll Shores, died peacefully on June 27, 2025 at the Crystal Coast Hospice House after a brief, unexpected illness. He was surrounded by the love of his family at the time of his passing.
Ed was raised in New York City and educated by Franciscan priests and brothers at St. Francis Prep High School and St Francis College of Brooklyn. He embraced the Franciscan teachings of simplicity, humility, the interconnectedness of all creation and the importance of environmental stewardship. He found contentment in spending time with family and friends, the opportunity to run 4 miles a day in his home in the beautiful Hudson Valley of New York State and then in recent years on the beach and along the tranquil roads in Pine Knoll Shores, NC.
He loved a good book, a friendly game of golf with friends of equally poor talent and watching sports of all kinds on TV. He loved fishing, despite rarely catching. He enjoyed his wife’s culinary talents and always savored a very dry martini.
Ed’s career spanned 30 years working for New York State government in supervision and administrative positions. He treasured the relationships he forged during his career; many of these developed into lifelong friendships.
Ed is survived by his wife of 57 years, Michelle Powers; his son Matthew Powers and partner Kim Waites of Astoria Oregon; his son Andrew, Powers, daughter-in -law Jill Taormina and his grandson Wyatt Powers of Austin, Texas; his brother William Powers and many beloved nieces and nephews scattered around the country and the globe.
The family will gather at 9:30 on Friday, August 8, 2025 at St. Egbert’s Church, 1706 Evans Street in Morehead City, NC 28557 to welcome friends to celebrate Ed’s life, followed by a funeral mass at 10 am. A reception in the church hall will follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his name may be made to the Crystal Coast Hospice House, PO Box 640, 100 Big Rock Weigh, Newport, NC 28570 or to St. Francis Preparatory High School, 61-00 Francis Lewis Blvd. Fresh Meadows NY 11365.
Arrangements by Noe-Brooks Funeral Home, Morehead City, NC.
