Pine Knoll Shores

Ellen Westmoreland Smith, age 93, of Pine Knoll Shores, NC, passed away on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.

She was born on September 1, 1931, in Thomasville, NC and was the daughter of the late Prevette and Pearl Westmoreland.

Ellen was preceded in death by her loving husband of 67 years, William Marion Smith (“Bill”), her sister Barbara Westmoreland, brother Richard Westmoreland, and daughter in law Amelia Smith.

Ellen received her degrees in Education and Drama from Meredith College and went on to pursue her Master’s degree in Special Education from Winston-Salem State University. She taught Special Education for 20 years for the Winston-Salem Forsyth County school system, where she was the first certified teacher in learning disabilities in that district. Ellen was also one of the founding members of Knollwood Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, where she taught Sunday School for many years.

Bill and Ellen enjoyed traveling the world together in their retirement. They have been residents of Pine Knoll Shores for the last 30 years, where she enjoyed walking the beach, collecting seashells, reading, playing bridge, dancing, hosting dinner parties, and most of all enjoying time with her family. Ellen also took pride in her affiliations with her church, Bogue Banks Baptist Church, volunteering and serving on the board of the Carteret County Domestic Violence Program, where she was recognized as Volunteer of the Month many times, and serving as a hospice volunteer for many years. Ellen was a beloved wife, mother, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be deeply missed by all. She was intelligent, generous, and inspired all who had the privilege of knowing her.

She was also known for her elegant and vibrant taste in fashion, which was as memorable as her warm, infectious personality.

Ellen is survived by her son William Marion Smith Jr. of Clemmons and daughter Carol Amerson of Morehead City; six grandchildren, Rebecca Thomas (Michael), Brittany Flowers, Steve Smith (Andrea), Michelle Wence (Bryan), David Smith, and Meredith Coltman (Chris); and ten great-grandchildren, Eleanor Thomas, Hayes Dawson, Natalie, Steven, Macy, Leah and Harrison Smith, and Andrew, Wyatt and Henry Wence.
