Hazel Taylor Ives, 99, of Atlantic Beach, originally of Harlowe, passed away on Wednesday, June 25, 2025 at her home.
Hazel was a lifelong member of Harlowe United Methodist Church.
There will be a private graveside service.
She is survived by her two sons, Dr. Robert Lawrence Ives and wife, Marie Pintler of San Mateo, CA; John “Randy” Ives and wife, Sandra of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; grandson, Christopher “Chad” Ives and wife, Virginia of Morehead City; granddaughter, Karen Ives and husband, Aaqib Ansari of San Francisco, CA; grandson, Zackery Ives of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; great grandson, Benjamin and great granddaughter, Elliot Ives of Morehead City; niece, Kathryn Smith of Bachelor, nephew, Donald Small and wife, Linda of Harlowe, and many other family and friends she loved dearly.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Carlton and Eleanor Taylor; her husband, John “Bunny” Ives Jr.; and her three sisters, Edith Jarman, Ruth Smith, and Edna Blanton.
Hazel attended Beaufort High School and Elon College. She retired as a supervisor at Cherry Point Station Supply.
Hazel was born in Harlowe in 1926. The daughter of a farmer, she grew up with an appreciation of the land and country lifestyle. Summer evenings were spent on the front porch with her parents, children, relatives, and neighbors recounting the day, telling amusing stories, and watching the world pass by. On weekends friends and family gathered at her sister’s home on Neuse River for skiing, swimming, and cooking fish and crabs netted from Clubfoot Creek. The fall was spent canning and preserving the wonderful things from the farm that we enjoyed all winter long.
One of her dreams was having a place at the beach. She bought one of the first available lots on the north side of Ocean Ridge Drive in Atlantic Beach and had a second home built there in the seventies. She moved there permanently following the death of her husband John, affectionately known as “Bunny” to family and friends. There she welcomed friends and family to share the house and the beach. Many happy hours were spent lounging on the deck watching the boats, birds, and sunburned tourists return from the beach.
She was an avid college sports fans and rooted for most all ACC teams…except when they were playing against NC State. Both her son Lawrence and granddaughter Karen attended State. Lawrence called whenever there was an ACC game to provide the TV station and start time. A highlight of her life, she attended a State versus Clemson game at Carter-Finely stadium as a guest of the Dean of Sciences, which State won in an exciting finish.
She enjoyed spending time with her son Randy and his family in Ft. Lauderdale, where Randy works as a boat captain. She twice visited her son Lawrence in California, once with Bunny and once with her sisters Edith and Edna. There she visited San Francisco, Napa Valley, Yosemite, and Lake Tahoe.
In February, family and friends gathered at the beach house for her 99th birthday, where we celebrated the gifts she had given to family and friends with her hospitality, wisdom, memories, cheerfulness, and love. We are all so grateful she was a part of our life for so many years. She was the glue that bound us together.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to her loving care companions, Dana Nelson, Margaret Capps, Elvia Flores, and Nicole Ball. Also to Meals on wheels volunteers Don, Carl, and Lisa, who spent many hours visiting with her during their deliveries.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Harlowe United Methodist Church, 5119 Hwy 101, Newport, NC, or Meals on Wheels, 1209 Arendell St., Morehead City, NC.
