Mr. Rountree was born on 10 October 1931 in Edenton, NC, to Mary E. Rountree. Mr. Rountee grew up on the Rountree farm near Edenton. As an enterprising youngster of six he sold fishing hooks and sinkers he ordered from the Sears and Robuck catalog to fishermen along the Chowan River. He completed seminary at Temple Baptist in Chattanooga TN, after which he interned in several churches throughout Mississippi. Later he served churches in Tennessee, Virginia, North Carolina, and New Jersey. He and his wife, Kathleen (Kay), were active in the youth ministry of New Jersey and took in numerous children and young adults into their home. To make ends meet, Horace had numerous jobs over the years, including furniture salesman, insurance salesman, and real estate broker. Many in the area may remember him as the manager of local convenience stores in Beaufort and Morehead City.

Horace is predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Kathleen Veldon Lewis, and oldest son, Horace Elton Rountree, Jr. of Morehead City.

He is survived by four sons, William R. Rountree of Morehead City, Dr. Rodney A. Rountree of East Falmouth, MA, Peter A. Rountree of Newport, David A. Rountree and John K. Rountree, both of Morehead City; nine grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren.
