Onslow

The family of John William Blackburn is deeply saddened to announce his passing on May 2, 2025, as he was called to be with the Lord. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a committed veteran of the Air Force. He was 78 years old.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Born on November 24, 1946 in Wilkes County, John lived a life full of adventure and purpose. His service in the United States Air Force instilled in him a strong sense of duty and commitment, values that he carried with him throughout his life. John was proud of his military service, and it shaped the man he became—one who valued integrity, hard work, and the importance of family.

John was a devoted husband to Linda, and together they created a loving home filled with warmth and laughter. As a father, he was a guiding light, always encouraging his kids to pursue their passions and instilling in them the values of perseverance and hard work. His role as a grandfather brought him immense joy, as he cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren sharing stories and laughter.

A true adventurer at heart, John had a special love for travel, particularly to the breathtaking landscapes of the western United States. He found solace and inspiration in the grandeur of the Grand Canyon and the natural beauty of Yellowstone National Park. These trips were not just vacations for John; they were opportunities to connect with nature and create lasting memories with his wife. They were full-time RVers for 18 years, making lifelong friends along the way.

After a career of 35 years at RJ Reynolds, John embraced retirement with the same dedication he brought to his work. He was also a man of action, never one to sit still for long. He had a remarkable talent for building, including home projects and building 5 homes for his family. His hands were always busy, and his creativity knew no bounds. John’s resourcefulness and determination inspired those around him, and he took great pride in his ability to tackle any challenge that came his way. He also was an avid football fan, always rooting for the Washington Redskins and Alabama Crimson Tide.

John’s loyal companion, his beloved dog Mollie, was never far from his side. Their bond was a testament to his gentle spirit and love for animals including his past beloved dogs including Spice, Brandy, and Gizzy. These companions brought him joy and comfort in every moment.

John will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, his adventurous spirit, and his generous heart. He leaves behind a legacy of cherished memories and a profound impact on all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a Humane Society of your choice, honoring John’s commitment to his furry companions.
