Major Jon Benjamin Covert USMCR, Ret, 75, of Newport, died on December 4, 2025, at Carteret Health Care in Morehead City.
Son of the late Walter Ray and Velma Marie Franklin Covert of North East, PA, he graduated from North East High School where he played baseball and was Captain of the wrestling team. He continued his education at East Carolina University with undergraduate and graduate courses in mathematics, a subject he loved.
Jon served his country for over 48 years, retiring from USMCR in 1996 and FRCE in 2015. He served two terms as President of the Newport Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow and was a 32 Degree Scottish Rite Mason of the Newport Lodge. He was an usher and Chalister in several Episcopal churches and one Anglican church. A volunteer math teacher at Annunciation Catholic School, Havelock, for five years and a volunteer math tutor and a youth sports coach for many young people throughout his life earned him the induction to the North Carolina Order of the Long Leaf Pine.
Jon is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dorothy (Dot), of Newport; son, Benjamin Arendell (Kristen); grandchildren, Payton Arendell, Reynolds Bowman, Virginia Loraine, and Marthamae Davis of Beaufort, SC; sister, Marion Covert Nicastro of Raleigh; and brothers, Richard Kimbel of Ripley, NY and Russel Franklin (Christine) of Newport; as well as several cherished cousins, nephews and nieces. A cherished friend, Linda Stewart Bales and Godson, Jonas Stewart, Carlisle, PA also survive him.
A memorial Mass will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Beaufort, NC with the Rev. Tambria Lee officiating. Special music will be provided by St. Paul's choir with George Hirarasawa, soloist, and Matthew Hill, organist. Burial will be in the Thomas Arendell lot within Bayview Cemetery, Morehead City with military honors.
