He was an usher and Chalister in several Episcopal churches and one Anglican church. A volunteer math teacher at Annunciation Catholic School, Havelock, for five years and a volunteer math tutor and a youth sports coach for many young people throughout his life earned him the induction to the North Carolina Order of the Long Leaf Pine.
