Lawrence Hajduk

August 19, 1948 — June 15, 2026

Newport

Lawrence E “Larry” Hajduk, 77, of Newport, NC, formerly of Buffalo, NY, passed away peacefully at his home on June 15, 2026.

A memorial service to honor Larry’s life will be held at 11am, Wednesday June 24, 2026, in the chapel of Noe-Brooks Funeral Home in Morehead City. A lunch/celebration of life will follow. Note: Due to Larry’s penchant for wearing a plaid, button-down shirt 365 days per year, we request that all of those attending the service find your favorite plaid shirt, and wear it to the service. Let’s make a sea of plaid, to honor Larry.

Larry was born on August 19, 1948, in Buffalo, NY to parents, John P Hajduk Jr. and Helen Hajduk. He was a 1966 graduate of Depew High School in Depew, NY, and a BS/MS graduate from the State University College at Buffalo. He had a 35 year career with the Cheektowaga-Sloan public schools, teaching English, Language Arts, Public Speaking, and Journalism at John F Kennedy High School in Cheektowaga, NY. During his distinguished career as an educator, he also served as President and Chief Negotiator of the Teachers Association of Cheektowaga-Sloan, was a member of the New York State United Teachers, as well as the National Education Association.

In addition to his paid career, Larry served as a volunteer fireman in his hometown, achieving Life Member status at the South Line Volunteer Fire Company in Cheektowaga, NY, where he also served as a director, past President, and was a member of their Benevolent Association. He also maintained a lifetime membership of the Southwestern Volunteer Fireman’s Association and the Fireman’s Association of New York.

Following his career in education and fire service, Larry retired and moved from Buffalo to the much warmer climate in Newport, NC, in order to be close with his son Jeff, who had moved down several years earlier to start his career and start a family of his own. In 2004, Grandpa Larry welcomed his only grandson, Jacob, into the world, and the ensuing years included weekly trips with Jacob to the NC Aquarium, Dairy Queen, and any store that sold Legos or Super Mario games/merchandise. So many Lego sets were built with his grandson.

When he wasn’t spoiling his grandson, he was at home in Newport, enjoying the greatest neighbors in the Greyson Lane Crew, whether that included cookouts by the pool at Casa de Fields, helping neighbors with assorted projects or repairs, or just getting coffee and a lottery ticket over at Waves with one of his buddies. He had a quiet generosity about him, whether it meant grabbing his tools to help a neighbor, donating generously to a friend’s charitable cause, surprising a friend or neighbor with a most generous gift, or just taking time to visit a friend and be there to listen.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, John and Helen Hajduk, of Depew, NY; his brothers, John P Hajduk III of Alexandria, VA, and Joseph Hajduk of Buffalo, NY.

Those left to cherish wonderful memories of Larry include his son, and daughter in law, Jeffrey and Liane Hajduk and grandson, Jacob Hajduk, all of Cape Carteret, NC. He also leaves behind his fabulous neighbors on Greyson Lane, who were like a second family to Larry, and whose love and kindness are so much appreciated by his family.
