Margaret Haviland, a beacon of strength and compassion, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2024, in Newport, North Carolina. Born on December 7, 1957, in White Plains, New York, Margaret's life was a testament to her resilience, dedication, and unwavering love for her family and community.
A celebration of life will be held at 7:00 PM on Friday, May 10, 2024 at Noe-Brooks Funeral Home of Morehead City. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Friday at the funeral home.
Margaret's journey began as the beloved daughter of Chauncey and Muriel Haviland. Her formative years in White Plains shaped a woman of integrity and grit, values that she carried throughout her life. She was a cherished sister among her eight siblings and shared an unbreakable bond with each of them. Although she faced the profound loss of her daughter, Sarah Francis Garner, and her brothers, Francis and Joseph Haviland, Margaret's spirit remained undimmed, a testament to her inner fortitude.
Margaret's devotion to her country was evident in her service with the United States Marine Corps, where she served honorably for 15 years, achieving the rank of Corporal. Her time stationed at Cherry Point and in Korea imbued in her a sense of duty and pride that she exuded in all her endeavors. Following her military career, Margaret channeled her nurturing spirit into a new calling as a Registered Nurse. At Carteret Health Care, she was not just an RN but a much-respected figure whose care and empathy touched the lives of countless individuals.
In her personal life, Margaret was a loving wife to her husband, Brian "Ward" Garner, of Newport. Their partnership was a true love story, filled with shared dreams and mutual support. As a mother and grandmother, Margaret's legacy continued through her grandson, Easton Chance Gabriel, and granddaughter, Bristol Alaina Cody of Kansas. Her guidance and love will forever be cherished and remembered by them.
Margaret's life was a reflection of the love she had for her family, including her husband's parents, Howard and Peggy Garner, and her brother-in-law, Allen Howard Garner Jr. Though they preceded her in death, the memories they shared continue to live on through the stories and laughter of family gatherings.
