Mary Alice McDermott

Mary Alice McDermott, 102 years old, of Newport North Carolina passed into God’s arms on Saturday March 7, 2026.

A memorial service will be held in Sonoma California at St Leo’s Catholic Church April 22, 2026 at 11am.

Mary was born on February 1, 1924 to Charles and Irma Thomas (Minor) in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

At the age of 14 Mary and her identical twin sister Janie followed in their mother’s footsteps and became professional ice skaters. Touring the United States and eventually preforming as the Thomas Twins in the Ice Follies.

Mary met her husband, Joseph McDermott in San Francisco and they had 57 beautiful years together. They lived in San Francisco and after retirement moved to Sonoma California. They have 2 daughters, Mary Catherine McDermott of Newport North Carolina, and Terrianne Kidd (Jinx Kidd) of Newport North Carolina, 1 grandson, Dr Jason Kidd (Dr Katherine Hansen) and a great granddaughter, Natalie Kidd of Berkeley California. Mary also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who she always held close to her heart.

She really enjoyed golfing with her ladies group “The Swingers”, knitting and jigsaw puzzles, where she would consistently have one missing puzzle piece. She enjoyed the simple things in life and keeping herself pampered.

Mary moved to Newport North Carolina 2 ½ years ago to live close to her daughters.

Mary is preceded in death by her husband Joseph McDermott and they are now dancing together again; reunited with her twin sister Janie Sullivan and older sister Ardria Yoder.

We, her family ask you to bow your head for just a moment and remember a happy memory shared with her and say a prayer for God to take special care of this gift he has allowed us to enjoy
