Morehead City

Nancy Gray Dale, 93, passed away peacefully in her home in Morehead City on the 9th of May, 2026. A graveside service to honor her memory will be held at a later date.

Nancy was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, and community member. Born on the 8th of February 1933 in Springfield, MA to Stewart and Doris Gray, she was the middle of three sisters. Her peers described her as warm, serene, and strong minded from a young age. Upon earning her diploma from Northfield School for Girls in Gill, MA, she devoted her college years to training at the Springfield Hospital School of Nursing. It was there where she established herself as a compassionate and principled nurse, rallying her colleagues to ban smoking in the medical facility.

After marrying her husband Lloyd on New Year’s Eve of 1955, she would go on to lovingly raise their three children in their East Longmeadow MA home. They remember her fondly as a selfless and kind-hearted mother. In a touching testament to the safe haven she created, her son Daniel half-jokes that she was “the only normal person in the family”.

She and Lloyd would go on to retire in Smyrna, NC. The Creekfront home that they built together- affectionately dubbed “Camp Smyrna”- welcomed countless friends and family over the decades. Despite its inherent tranquility, it was her warm, accepting, and positive spirit that truly made it a sanctuary for their six grandchildren. Coming from near and far to visit, they fondly recall the many hours spent on the water, playing word games together, and sitting together for her deliciously prepared meals.

Nancy enjoyed reading, gardening, and giving back to her community. She and Llyod volunteered for years with the Beaufort Historical Association, where Lloyd drove a double-decker bus and Nancy found joy in dressing in period costume to teach children about colonial America. In a testament to her lifelong commitment to helping others, she also taught English to refugee children and adults and volunteered at her local library. After a move to Morehead City, she spent her final years surrounded by loved ones. She took great joy in watching her grandchildren grow into adulthood. She remained active and sharp minded. She was a voracious reader of memoirs and historical fiction, followed current events, and founded a weekly Scrabble group at the Leon Mann Center. She was an enthusiastic Scrabble player and continued to win games until the very end.

Nancy was loved deeply for the warmth she brought to every room she entered- a warmth that will linger long after she has left. Optimistic and open-hearted, she met everyone she encountered with patience and without judgement. She was generous to a fault, forgiving without condition, and wise without pretension. As a pillar of the Dale family, she will be dearly missed.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 66 years Lloyd Stanton Dale, and her sister Janice Maxwell. She is lovingly remembered by her three children, Thomas { Patricia} Dale of Morehead City, Susan {Keith} Houck of Chapel Hill, and Daniel Dale of Pocatello, Idaho, her six grandchildren Emilie and Sierra Houck, Michael and Andrew Dale, and Maxime and Iliya Dale, her sister Eleanor {Jack} Millard of Boylston Massachusetts, her brother-in -law Ronald Maxwell of Morehead City, and five nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the professionals of Home Helpers and 3HC Hospice, whose compassionate care made it possible for Nancy to spend her final days at home, as she always wished. A very special thanks to Erin Wright, whose devoted companionship over the past year and a half made her nothing less than a member of the family. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to organizations supporting refugees, education, or social services- causes that reflect the life that she loved.
