Cape Carteret

Peter “Pete” Robert Jacobsen, 86, of Cape Carteret, passed away on Monday, September 14, 2026 at Carolina East Medical Center in New Bern.

Known to many as “Birdman” and “Pete the Artist,” Peter Jacobsen was recognized for a life shaped by skilled work, creative expression, and a distinctive point of view. He was a clammer, an artist, and, as those who knew him described, a philosopher of sorts. These roles reflected the character of his daily life and the way he moved through the world, combining labor, artistry, and reflection in a manner that left a lasting impression.

Peter was especially known for his bird and fish carvings, work that stood as a clear expression of his artistic identity. Through these carvings, he became associated with careful craftsmanship and a subject matter drawn from the natural world. The name “Pete the Artist” spoke to this part of his life, while “Birdman” reflected the memorable connection many made between Peter and the creations for which he was known.

He also loved people, a simple but meaningful truth that helped define how he was remembered. Alongside his work as a clammer and his reputation as an artist, this regard for others formed an important part of the memory he leaves behind. The combination of his occupations, his creative gifts, and his thoughtful nature made him a person who stood apart in the minds of those who knew him.

The family will celebrate his life privately.

He is survived by his daughter, Jada Jacobsen Bauch and husband, Andrew of Guyton, GA; son, Jason Edward Jacobsen of Asheboro, NC; grandson, Benjamin Owens of Guyton, GA; sister, Ann Jacobsen Smith of Deer Isle, ME; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Julius and Marie Jacobsen; brother, Edward Francis Barry; and three nephews.
