Virginia Donnell

Virginia Potter Donnell passed away peacefully on August 3, 2026, at the age of 81, surrounded by the love of her family.

Private services were held. 

Born Virginia Staton Potter on December 17, 1944, in Beaufort, North Carolina, Virginia lived a life defined by service and devotion to her family and community. Throughout her life, she was also known as Virginia Potter Kibbey before marrying her beloved husband, Newman Ross Donnell III.

Virginia earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Birmingham-Southern College after beginning her studies at Greensboro College. Her professional career reflected her commitment to helping others. She served as a Trust Officer with U.S. Bank's Private Client Group, following serving as Assistant Executive Director of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Mid-America Chapter, helping organize major fundraising initiatives that supported cancer research, patient assistance, and education.

Virginia's commitment to service extended well beyond her career. Through civic leadership and volunteerism, she devoted countless hours to strengthening the communities in which she lived. She held leadership and volunteer roles with the United Way, the Junior Leagues of Amarillo and Kansas City, the Don and Sybil Harrington Cancer Center, the Amarillo College Adult Students and Women's Advisory Council, and local public school enrichment programs. She was also a proud member of The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America (North Carolina Society) and the Kansas Chapter of P.E.O., reflecting her lifelong dedication to education, historic preservation, and community service.

Virginia and Ross made their home for many years in Leawood, Kansas. In retirement, they enjoyed returning often to North Carolina's Crystal Coast and ultimately chose to spend Virginia's final years in her hometown of Beaufort.

Virginia will be remembered for her quiet strength, gracious spirit, and unwavering love for her family and friends.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Newman Ross Donnell III; her sons, Richard Glenn Kibbey IV and Christopher Potter Kibbey; and her grandchildren, Kendra Kibbey, Olivier Kibbey, Cole Kibbey, and Felix Kibbey, who brought her immeasurable pride and joy.

She was preceded in death by her father, James Hollister Potter III; her mother, Virginia Staton Potter; and her brother, Frank Hollister Potter.

The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the clergy and congregation of Ann Street Methodist Church for their faith, friendship, and compassionate support, and to the dedicated staff of SECU Crystal Coast Hospice House in Newport, NC for the exceptional care, comfort, and dignity they provided during Virginia's final days.

Her kindness, integrity, and quiet generosity touched countless lives. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
