Walter Scheffe Jr.

Walter Scheffe Jr., 81, of Cedar Island, passed away on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at Carteret Health Care in Morehead City. 

No formal services are planned.

He is survived by a brother, Richard Scheffe, of Maine, and two sisters, Pauline Grimes of Englewood, FL, and Margaret Warren of Cookeville, TN and several nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara of Atlanta, Georgia.

Walter graduated from Massapequa, NY high school in 1962, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a radioman on the destroyer USS Ingersoll before being honorably discharged in 1966. After the service, Walter was employed by Grumman Aerospace located in Bethpage, New York and worked on the early Lunar Modules. After Grumman he worked for over 30 years for the Long Island Lighting Company as a laboratory technician in the Environmental Engineering Department, most of his time until retirement at the Sea Cliff, New York facility.

Walter was an avid kayaker and loved recreational fishing and archeology. He had a strong passion for researching and finding Native American artifacts and had an elaborate collection of Arrowheads that he donated to the Garvis Point Museum and Preserve which orchestrated the naming of Walter’s spit – a Native American archeological site Walter discovered bordering the Long Island sound in Glen Cove, NY (Google – Walter’s Spit is a notable prehistoric archaeological site located on a small sand spit in Glen Cove on the North Shore of Long Island, New York. Walter was a self taught scholar focused primarily on archaeology of humankind development but his curiosity extended to all areas of natural science – chemistry, botany, zoology, marine science, astronomy, and geology. He loved collecting coins and was a loving pet owner for his cat, Ripple (named after his favorite Grateful Dead song), and dogs Angus and Ziggy who now resides with Walter’s sister Margaret.
