Newport

Wanda “Windy” June Penny, 77, of Newport, passed away peacefully at CarolinaEast Medical Center with family by her side on November 22, 2025.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 Sunday, November 30, 2025 at Noe-Brooks Funeral Home in Morehead City. Burial will follow at Gethsemane Cemetery in Newport. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00pm at the funeral home.

Windy, as she preferred to be called, was born in Augusta, Georgia on June 17th, 1948 to Albert and Helen Penny. The family soon moved to Newport, N.C. where she spent the majority her life, as well as some years spent living in Wilmington, N.C. and Albemarle, N.C.

She spent some years studying nursing as well as raising her son Brian and eventually began working as a caretaker in different nursing facilities as well as in homes.

Windy enjoyed the simpler things in life and did not ask for fancy things and was always content to sit and read scripture or to listen to gospel music. She was a music fan and anyone that spent any amount of time with her would likely hear an Elvis Presley song, or twenty! She loved reminiscing about her mama, daddy and her 4 sisters and three brothers. She spent a lot of quiet time looking through old pictures of past times in her life.

Windy was a kind and gentle person and could often be seen giving a ride to friends in and around Newport. She was an introspective, reflective and retrospective kind of person and could be content sitting at the park watching the seagulls fly or the squirrels running through the trees.

Windy was preceded in death by her mother and father, Helen and Albert Penny of Newport, sister Rose McReynolds of Newport, brother David Penny of Newport, brother Daniel Penny of Newport and brother Bobby Penny of Newport.

Windy is survived by her sisters, Lois Whaley of Newport, Rita Gaskins of New Bern, and Frances Pitts of Georgia. She is also survived by her son, Brian Kelly (Britni), and granddaughter Isla Grace Kelly of Clayton, N.C., as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
