William Gardiner Jr. (“Bill”), 70, of Cape Carteret, North Carolina, passed away at home on July 10, 2026.Bill was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose kindness, patience, and sense of humor left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. He spent his career as a painter, taking pride in his work and the relationships he built along the way.
Outside of work, Bill found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved music—especially the blues—and could often be found playing his harmonica. He enjoyed writing poetry, reading, and fishing, finding peace in both nature and creativity.
Bill’s life was one of both joy and hardship. He faced many personal battles with remarkable resilience, including the heartbreaking loss of his son, Ian. Though life brought him difficult challenges, those who loved him knew his generous heart, his quiet patience, and his ability to make others laugh.
Recovery became an important part of Bill’s journey. After achieving years of sobriety, he experienced setbacks, but never gave up on the hope of recovery. In his later years, he recommitted himself to Alcoholics Anonymous and was proud to have more than five years of sobriety. His perseverance, honesty, and willingness to encourage others served as an inspiration to many.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Joni Gardiner; his daughters and sons-in-law, Jessica and Rob Sluik, Shannon and Rob Lesniewski, and Sarah and Charles Barham; and his eight grandchildren: Kaela, Austin, Tori, Ellie, Ember, Everly, Jovie, and Miles. He also leaves behind many extended family members and dear friends who will miss him deeply.
He was preceded in death by his son, Ian; his parents, William and Nancy Gardiner Sr. and his sister, Kathi Albert.
Bill will be remembered for his warm heart, gentle spirit, quick wit, and the compassion he showed to others. Like all of us, his life was imperfect, but it was filled with love, perseverance, and moments of grace. Those who knew him will remember not only the battles he faced, but the kindness with which he faced them.
In accordance with his wishes, Bill will be cremated. A private celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
The family is grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support during this difficult time. Though Bill is no longer with us, his music, laughter, and love will remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
“Turn up the music.”
